Carolyn Stanton Wilmot, age 74, passed away peacefully with her daughter and her dog at her side on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Carolyn spent 10 days in the ICU of Aurora BayCare Center in Green Bay, WI, before being moved to the hospice. After pneumonia and a series of mini-strokes in November, Carolyn was admitted to the hospital for septic shock and congestive heart failure. Carolyn was born in New Orleans, LA but was a resident of Appleton, WI for the last 15 years. Carolyn had a lifelong love of learning, having earned a BA from Barnard College, an MS in Library Science from Simmons College and an MA in French from New York University, with additional post graduate work at the University of Chicago. Prior to attending Barnard, Carolyn attended the International School in Geneva. Carolyn spoke fluent French, and was highly proficient in Portuguese and German. In various roles over the course of a diverse career, Carolyn worked at the Harvard Business School, the Supreme Court of Tennessee Law Library, and Encyclopedia Britannica. Every year Carolyn sought to learn something new, one year she studied cooking at Maxim’s in Paris. Most recently before her death, Carolyn attended a Russian Literature class at Lawrence University. Carolyn was known to her many friends as extremely generous with her time and money, a gastronome, an ardent fan of classical and world music, an animal lover, and a dedicated volunteer for a variety of causes from veteran’s affairs to homelessness. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Evangeline Wilmot Gray of Alexandria, VA, as well as her sister Jane Field of Hillsborough, CA. Additionally both pets, Medallion and C. Biscuit, have been adopted by Carolyn’s daughter. The memorial service for Carolyn will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (325 E. Franklin St., Appleton). Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Petco foundation for animal welfare or The Coalition for the Homeless.
